Student, DJ, Personality
As a student studying communications, Tyler Beck has been developing a unique take on classic menswear that focuses on dressing for success with an added personal taste, all while still remaining affordable.
“My style? It has gone through some phases and it is STILL maturing. The formation of my style comes in a sense from the phrase ‘You have to dress for the job you want’. For me, I just had to see the looks that wanted me. I would go around to certain clothing stores and take mental pictures of the window fronts. Knowing well that I could never afford any of it, I tried my best to apply permutation and combination to the art of dress-up… clearance racks, hand-me-downs, and thrift stores soon became my best friends.” -Tyler
“Growing up, I can remember my mother always dressing myself and my younger brother. I can note that she would sometimes even buy us the same clothes. I went to schools where uniforms were strictly enforced so gaining an individual sense of style in grade school was never going to happen.”
“In high school, my attraction to style began to grow, although I wore a uniform still, it was a classier look. Everyday, to no end, a white collared shirt, red tie, khakis, a black sports blazer, black or brown belt, and black or brown shoes; one would think it was a boarding school. Moreover, in us having this standard of dress, the teachers and instructors held the same decorum. These ‘brotha’s’ had style that crept out of a GQ magazine and it was from them that I began to take my interest into the art of the style of dress.”
“When I dress, I like to be cleaner than the board of health and sharp as a tack. This style evokes confidence and precedence.” -Tyler
Tyler definitely wears this with confidence. That can be a difference maker in your style. Especially if you are trying something new in your wardrobe, or trying to dress better, being self-conscious definitely won’t help you pull it off. Step out with confidence, and people will notice a difference (in a good way).
Trousers of a looser cut and high hem like these aren’t very common and I wouldn’t recommend them for most, but Tyler rocks them well. Like his choice of accessories, they add more uniqueness to his look.
“I am currently a communications study major. I love the art and skill that lies behind people, conversations, and seeing how they all connect. I like to take lots of nature walks around the Lake Forest area. I have come to find that if you take the roads less traveled, then there are some treasures along the way! I also have a campus radio show on Saturdays from 4-7pm (frequency 88.9 fm) with my partner in crime and co-host Jordan Kindle. Our show is called ‘The White Chocolate Hour’.”
“WMXM 88.9 FM Broadcasts Live from Lake Forest College in Lake Forest Illinois. It is a multi-format student run radio programming organization. I had just transferred to Lake Forest (Fall ’13) and wanted to find an extra curricular to get involved with. As soon as I heard about the possibility to become a DJ, I pounced on it.”
“I had originally planned for it to be a solo act, but I befriended a really great dude who has a cool taste in music. Jordan and I have similar tastes in music, but of a different prerogative. This is why we opted to host a show ‘The White Chocolate Hour’; Seeing as he is White, and I am Black, it works. White chocolate is delicious and although sometimes you only have a little bit, you always wish you had more when its done. I (DJ Phoenix) play the old school hits/dusties of R and B, Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, Funk, etc. Jordan (DJ Kindle Swindle) plays the hits of Rock, Pop, Jam Bands, etc. Tune in Saturdays from 4-7pm, 88.9 FM, or listen live at WMXM.ORG.”
Tyler’s 3 tips of Style Advice:
1. Never wear necklaces with ties, it is poor decorum.
2. Always make sure your pants are zipped. Your clothes may look good, but you will look foolish.
3. The man makes the clothes, not the other way around.
